Learning Space Design: Build it and they will come, get it Right and more will Follow

A recent article in The Independent highlighted that campus new build projects are not only an opportunity to create environments which support new approaches to teaching and learning, but are also ‘magnets’ for attracting more students.:

  • Newcastle College’s new ‘ Lifestyle Academy’ has seen a 71% increase in enrolments for mature students in two years since opening
  • South East Essex College’s move to a £52m new building has generated a 42% increase in applications in four years

It’s clear that colleges are using new build projects to proactively market themselves as fit for 21st century. If you are interested in learning space design the two Scottish RSCs have established the Learning Space Design Forum for college or university staff who are facing, or who have already completed, a new build or redesign project. Members will have the opportunity to share expertise and explore strategic use of spaces to support learning. The next meeting of the Learning Space Design Forum is scheduled for 10th June 2008 12-4pm at Edinburgh’s Telford College. For more information and to book a place click here.
